A Home Garden ? Fun For The Whole Family

Home gardening is a wonderful pastime that the whole family can enjoy.  In addition, gardening has become an increasingly popular hobby for people of all ages.  Currently, studies show that in the United States, eight of ten households take part in some type of home gardening endeavor.  Based on these statistics, gardening is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the nation.

Typically, when people start planting their garden, they start with flowers.  In addition, most people will pursue planting roses.  The novice garden does not realize that roses usually take the most time and effort as compared to other flowers.  With such an enormous array of flowers to choose from, it is best for the novice to start of with easy care plants and flowers.

Vegetable gardens have become quite popular too.  A vegetable garden can bring a sense of pride and accomplishment when you place those fresh vegetables on your dinner table.  The list of vegetable plants is endless, therefore when planning your vegetable garden choose the right vegetable for your growing climate.  For instance, cool weather crops would be green beans, zucchini, and cucumbers.

Many gardeners will consider planting fruits as well.  In a warm climate, you could plant watermelons, and trees such as apricots and peaches.  A berry garden is also fun, planting strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.  These types of berry gardens are easy to care for and take less space than a traditional vegetable garden.

Herbs are another favorite for the home garden.  If you have limited space, you can grow your herbs indoors in a sunny window.  The most often used herbs for cooking are basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, and cilantro.  These herbs are easy to grow too.

Landscaping your yard is another form of gardening.  There are different types of grasses and shrubbery to decorate your yard.  Decorative rocks, ponds, and statues are also included as a form of landscape gardening.  Landscaping your yard is not limited to plant life.  As with a garden, your lawn and shrubbery need upkeep.

As mentioned earlier, gardening can be fun and educational for the whole family.  In addition, what a delight to see the flowers bloom and harvest the vegetables.  However, as with anything else, to be a successful home gardener takes work.  Plants need to be weeded and watered.  Do not get discouraged if the flowers are not as brilliant as expected or the beans did not do so well.  Research the plant in question and then try again next planting season, eventually you will have a wonderful garden.

Home and Garden Tips

Article by Dan Fenstemaker, Inventor of the Original INTELETOOL

Planning and planting a garden is easier than you may think, and fresh grown vegetables, herbs, and flowers are great rewards that are worth a couple weekends of getting your garden underway. Below are a few basic tips to use around your home and garden.

1. Before you begin to dig up a place in your yard for your garden, decide how much work you want to put into gardening and how big of yield you hope to harvest. If you just start tearing up yard, you may end up with too much garden and wasted space.

2. Many will till their garden twice before planting. The first till is to break up and loosen hard soil to about 12 to 14 inches of depth. The second should till compost and fertilizer into the soil.

3. Depending on your soil type, mix in compost material and possibly peat moss to add nutrients and to aid in water absorption and drainage.

4. Keep soil around the base of plants loose to aid in water and nutrient absorption.

5. Watering more deeply allows longer periods of time between watering. If it is sunny and hot, water in early morning or at night. There is less water evaporation at these times which allows water to soak into the soil.

6. For lawn care, one deep watering is better than watering lightly several times. In normal summer conditions, lawns need about one inch of rain per week.

7. To help keep water from evaporating from lawns, keep lawns cut at about two inches, or so. Not gathering grass clippings will allow for natural compost to develop which adds nutrients to the soil of your lawn.

8. To slow evaporation from your garden, put a couple of inches of mulch on the surface of the soil.

These are basic home and garden tips that can be used in most climates and regions of the country. Your local home and garden professional can also give you helpful tips, especially those that may particularly apply to the local area in which you live.

Best Home Gardening Supplies to Give As Christmas Gifts

The month of December is usually that time of the year when gardeners are more likely to take a break from pottering about in their home gardens. However, most gardening experts share the opinion that it is also the best time to buy gifts for those who love gardening. Some of them have identified certain home gardening supplies that would be best as Christmas gifts.

According to people who love gardening, plants are the most obvious Christmas gifts for those who can appreciate them. However, there are great plant gifts and there are plants that are just that – plants. They recommend those that can elicit excitement from the recipients, particularly if they are accomplished gardeners.

Some of the highly recommended ones are those that thrive during the winter and those plants that produce great fragrance. The highly recommended ones for those who keep their plants in cool places include: camellia, gardenia and jasmine. For recipients who live in humid and tropical areas and are more likely to keep their plants in the open sunlight, the best options are allamanda and bougainvillea.

Gifts need not be all about plants, home gardening supplies are also highly appreciated, particularly by those who spend a lot of their times taking care of their plants. Some of the items they would love to have this Christmas are gardening gloves, potting soils, twine and even long-lasting ones like rain gauge, compost thermometer and moisture probing instrument. For those who keep indoor gardens or those who live in apartments, pots with exciting designs will be useful.

For gift buyers who do not have much expertise in choosing tools and plants, experts recommend the safe but highly needed gift – gardening books. To select the best ones, go to the Internet first and search for the highly recommended publications or browse through bookstores and look at shelf offerings. Gardening books range from beginner sources to more complicated publications so buyers should make sure that they know the recipient’s level of gardening knowledge.

Be it plants, books or home gardening supplies, experts recommend conducting a research first before making a purchase. For busy gift-buyers, several web sites are available where orders can be made online. Such sites also offer free deliveries most of the time.

Home Gardening With Wildflowers

Home Gardening With Wildflowers

Home gardeners are showing a new enjoyment for the beauty of wild native flowers. For many years, wild native species were all that home gardeners had to work with, and they were valued for their beauty and usefulness. After showier, more productive forms of plants were introduced, interest in the wild native species for the garden declined. As formal gardening spread, the growing of wildflowers for pleasure became almost a lost art.

Native wildflowers have begun to be brought back into home flower gardens not only for their beauty but also in order to save the species. Wildflower gardens have now become popular in areas where wild plants are threatened. The goldenrod is one native plant that can be a beautiful addition to the home garden, not to mention that it attracts bees and other beneficial insects to the garden.

The predicament of the native plant life in the United States has been recognized for quite some time by a few insightful people. These people have seen the forests cut down, cities built up, roads paved, bogs drained, reservoirs built, and with each new development the wild native plants have suffered decline. If the native wildflowers are to be saved, we must learn how to grow them once again, and perpetuate each species effectively. Few Americans realize how rapidly native plants are being destroyed. Since much of the country is still being developed, causing the extensive destruction of native habitats, there has been a boom of enthusiasm for the use of native plants in landscaping as a means of perpetuating the wild native species.

In fact, gardening with wild native species is becoming quite a trend in the United States. While helping to save the natural heritage, gardeners are getting a real enjoyment for the ornamental possibilities of the local plant life. For example, some gardeners use attractive small native trees such as flowering dogwood and redbuds to grace the lawns of their homes. Growing wildflowers can also be an enjoyable visual experience, adding to the other benefits of gardening with wild native species.

The selection of wildflowers from which a gardener can choose is nearly endless. Although a wildflower garden can include species from various areas, gardens made up of flowers native to their own area are more common. There are three ways for cultivating native wildflowers. One is to include them into an already existing natural habitat. Another is to introduce wildflowers into a garden of cultivated flowers to provide more variety. A third is to develop a garden of wildflowers with common habitat requirements, such as a woodland garden. A spring woodland wildflower garden in the eastern United States could include spring beauty, bloodroot, dutchman’s breeches, dwarf iris, hepatica, jack-in-the-pulpit, squirrel-corn, Virginia bluebells, trout lilies, and various kinds of trilliums. The butterfly pea and the wild Indian strawberry are also good flowers to grow in partially shaded woodland gardens. The continuous production of flowers and fruit throughout the summer are very pretty to see.

The gardener chooses the type of wildflowers that best fits the garden area being worked with. In designing a wildflower garden, a gardener must also choose plants that are right for the condition of the land. Climate is important in deciding what plants can be grown in a given place. Such things as light, exposure, and the quality of the soil must also be considered. It is possible to create some type of wildflower garden in almost any kind of setting. The home gardener can create a good balance of species by selecting plants differing in heights, flower color, and blooming times.

In the past it was customary for gardeners to dig up wild plants and replant them in the garden. But with the native plants thinning, it may not be wise to dig up wild plants unless there is evidence that the area where the flowers are growing is going to be developed and the plants are likely to be destroyed. It’s best to either collect seeds from wild plants or purchase seeds (or plants grown from wild seeds). Gardeners collecting their own seeds should choose a sizable colony of plants and take only a small portion of the seeds, leaving most of them in the wild population for natural regeneration. As soon as possible after they have been collected, the seeds should be spread out on a newspaper to dry for a few days. Freshly collected seeds may be planted immediately, or they may be stored. The seeds of some species remain viable for many years. Most wildflower seeds will germinate better if they are stored in a refrigerator soon after collecting. They may be stored in envelopes, plastic baggies, or pill bottles. Gardeners need to label their collection accurately. Some seeds, like those of fleshy fruits, should be stored in sand in airtight containers in the refrigerator until the following spring. Some seeds need a time of cold to germinate, so alternating freezing and thawing can break down hard seed coats and immersing them in hot water will assist germination in other cases. Scratching or piercing the seed coats so that water can be absorbed will help some seeds.

Once the overall design of the garden has been laid out, the soil must be prepared. It is useless to scatter the seeds over an unprepared area and expect them to come up. As in any garden, the seeds must be sown in properly prepared soil. The soil should be able to stay moist and have good air circulation and drainage. If the soil is too sandy or clayey, some compost should be added to it. Most wildflowers grow best in neutral or slightly acid soils (pH 6.5-7.0), so it might be necessary to also add lime if the soil is too acidic, or garden sulfur if it is too alkaline.

Wildflower gardening is generally seen as low-maintenance gardening and this is often what attracts most gardeners with limited time on their hands. Many people think that wildflowers require little care, but if they are part of a backyard garden, they will need some maintenance. When new shoots appear in early spring, they should be fertilized. If plants look pale and weak in midsummer, they need to be fertilized again. Mulching between plants will keep down unwanted weeds, but it is important that the mulch not touch the garden plants, or they may begin to rot. The mulch keeps the soil from drying out. It may be necessary to water the wildflowers, particularly on sunny days, but it is just as important that they not be left wet overnight.

Experience will teach you what each kind of wildflower needs in the garden. For example, black-eyed Susans, sunflowers, and Queen Anne’s lace grow tall and spindly if grown in soil with high organic content. Butterfly-weed needs well-drained soil and will not tolerate mulching very well. Wild ginger, a North American herb that has two heart-shaped leaves, a single purple to reddish flower, and an aromatic root, needs soil that contains peat to help hold in moisture. Many native wildflowers have the ability to adapt to new surroundings, but selecting wildflowers that are native to the area often produces the best results.
